Modi faces life threat: Lawyer
Mumbai/ New Delhi, Oct. 20: Suspended commissioner of the Indian Premier League Lalit Modi’s lawyer from Mumbai Mohammed Abdi on Wednesday said that Mr Modi is refraining from coming to India from London, as there is a threat to his life from the underworld. Mr Abdi said that officers of the Enforcement Directorate could question Mr Modi through video conferencing instead.
Speaking to mediapersons on Wednesday afternoon at the Mumbai airport, Mr Abdi said, “Mr Modi has repeatedly informed the police about the threat to his life from various anti-social elements, especially from the underworld. This is why he is not coming to India. The ED officials can speak with him directly through video conferencing if required. Mr Modi will cooperate with them and in the probe completely.”
Mr Abdi also said that they had received a showcause notice from the passport office on October 15 and that they would file a reply before November 1.
The lawyer further attempted to put to rest speculations surrounding the BCCI’s complaint registered in Tamil Nadu about Mr Modi’s “suspicious” movements and rumours that he was likely to shift to Iceland to make another passport.
“Mr Modi is not going to shift to Iceland, nor is he going to procure a fresh passport. These speculations by the BCCI are baseless,” Mr Abdi said.
Earlier in the day, Mr Modi’s counsel Ram Jethmalani, who is arguing on his behalf in the Supreme Court, had told the court that
the committee formed to probe the matter was biased against Mr Modi.
Mr Abdi too echoed Mr Jethamalani’s words,
saying that they would reiterate in the apex court on Thursday that the BCCI should reconstitute the committee formed to probe the matter. “The committee members are biased against Mr Modi and there is a need to reconstitute the committee members. The inquiry should be carried out by independent people,” he said.
However, BCCI counsel C.S. Sundaram told a bench of Justices J.M. Panchal and Gyaan Sudha Misra that it was not possible to reconstitute the probe panel as it was in the advanced stage of its inquiry.
“Modi has been complaining against all the 30 members of the BCCI,” Sundaram said while Jethmalani pointed out that Jaitley had advised the BCCI when it contemplated an action against him.
