Mumbai pip Maharashtra

Vadodara, Oct. 24: In keenly contested matches, Mumbai defeated Maharashtra by 15 runs, while Baroda toppled Saurashtra by four wickets with one over to spare in the Twenty20 West Zone League cricket tournament at the Reliance Ground here on Sunday.

Opting to field first, Maharashtra had Mumbai in a spot after taking the important wickets of Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane and Abhishek Nayar with just seven runs on the board.

Maharashtra’s Samad Fallah claimed two of the three wickets.

Opener Valthaty and Aditya together added valuable 63 runs for the fourth wicket. Valthaty scored 37 before an accurate throw by D. Waghmare ran him out.

Ankit Chavan, who came at the fall of Valthaty, hit 44 runs.

A sixth-wicket partnership of 24 runs between Chavan (44 not out) and Siddharth Chitins (11 not out) helped Mumbai to 147/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

While Kedar Jadhav (47), Nikhil Paradkar (15) and Rohit Motwani (15) of Maharashtra made decent contributions, others failed miserably against the likes of Ajit Agarkar (3/19), Rohit Raje (3/26) and Javed Khan (2/28).

In another match, Cheteshwar Pujara’s 37-run knock helped Saurashtra post a respectable 113. Pujara was involved in a 44 run fourth-wicket partnership with Sheldan Jekson (19).

Rakesh Dhruv contributed an unbeaten 33 to the total.

For the opponents, Abhimanyu Chauhan was the most successful bowler scalping 3/18. Swapnil Singh took 2/36.

In reply, Baroda captain Pinal Shah laid the foundation with a solid 39. Useful contributions from Yusuf Pathan (17), Abhimanyu Chauhan (17) and Ketan Panchal (16 not out) ensured that Baroda complete the chase in 19 overs.
