N Srinivasan: In or out?
Conflicting reports are beginning to emerge about N Srinivasan taking charge of the BCCI. While one TV channel claimed that Srinivasan had returned to the helm of BCCI late last night, another channel, citing sources within the BCCI, claimed that the president-in-exile had not been reinstated. Many BCCI officials, the latter reported, were of the opinion that Srinivasan should not chair the working committee meeting scheduled to be held on August 2.
Srinivasan, who had to step aside, following allegations of betting against his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings' principal, Gurunath Meiyappan, was in a spot of bother on Tuesday after Bombay High Court quashed the findings of the BCCI internal probe panel and decreeing the panel itself "Illegal". In the light of the judgement by the Bombay High Court, a large portion within the BCCI believed that Srinivasan's chances of reclaiming the post of the president of the cricket board was in jeopardy.
In the wake of the Bombay High Court verdict, which, in effect, invalidated all the findings of the probe panel, interim chief of BCCI, Jagmohan Dalmiya said that the board would decide on the future course of action once it received the copy of the Court's judgement.
The internal probe panel comprising two retired judges had exonerated both Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals' co-owner, Raj Kundra in the spot fixing scandal.
The panel had reported that it had not found sufficient evidence to find the two of them guilty of betting. But, the findings of the report spurred widespread outrage with the BCCI and Srinivasan, in particular drawing a lot of flak.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have filed a chargesheet naming as many as 39 persons including underworld kingpin, Dawood Ibrahim, cricketer S Sreesanth among others. Rajasthan Royals' Captain, Rahul Dravid has been named as a witness in the case.
