Orthodox shots also assure success in T20
Some old-timers have condemned T20 as hit and giggle with a bit of improvisation but there are certain breathtaking knocks in IPL V that have proved cricket’s shortest format is not only about blasting your way through.
Rather, runs can be scored in bulk and at rapid pace with proper cricketing shots as well. And it’s the IPL that has been witness to such classy and quality displays.
If Mahela Jayawardene’s elegant 59-ball 110 helped Kings XI Punjab successfully chase down 200 against Kolkata Knight Riders back in 2010, performances from Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma in the current edition have led spectators to divert their minds from the manic hitting.
Not to say fans don’t enjoy the stuff from the likes of AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and David Warner, but Rahane and Rohit’s efforts brought about a refreshing change.
The unbeaten 109 from Rohit against Knight Riders last week was an innings where timing and placement dominated. “He (Rohit) is good enough to score centuries.
Of course, Gayle has shown the way (in T20) and so has Warner. Rohit is as good as them, technically more sound I feel.
It’s glad to see him getting runs with clean hitting, not slogging,” said Mumbai Indians opener Herschelle Gibbs, after MI’s 27-run win over KKR.
As Rohit himself had pointed out, “If you’re capable of unleashing good cricketing strokes, you can score in bulk even in T20.
Look at Rahane, Mahela and Gambhir. They don’t have to rely on power to get runs,” he added.
