Pacers ready for grind, says Sangakkara
Colombo, July 25: What looked like a 1-0 lead cushion has quickly grown into something bigger for this Sri Lankan side. A win here would take them to the threshold of being the No.1 Test team in the world. An inexperienced attack could be the spoke in the wheel for the hosts, but home skipper Kumar Sangakkara was only looking at the positives.
“Our attack is not exactly inexperienced. Dilhara Fernando has been around for a long time, Chanaka Welegedara has played Test cricket. Dammika Prasad as well,” said the left-hander.
The inclusion of Ajantha Mendis has bolstered the attack. Sangakkara noted expectations from the spinner were unrealistic, but he was ready to make a good comeback.
“It doesn’t work that way. He’s also played lot of cricket against India. So the more you play, players get used to you. He’s done well for us in the practice match and I am sure he will come good.”
The flat track at the SSC will also test the new look attack more. “All the fast bowlers available for this game are good and they are mentally prepared for the hard grind. Mendis along with the others will look at sharing the wickets,” added the skipper. The balance provided by Angelo Mathews adds to the side.
On the possible bowling combination, Sangakkara remained non-committal. “I think we are going to look at all three spinners and pick the two most effective ones. India are a strong side. Rangana Herath did well. His effort with the bat helped set up the game,” he said.
