Police to file charges today in Cronje's match-fixing scandal
Indian police are likely to file charges against the bookmakers on Monday in the match-fixing scandal involving the late South African skipper Hansie Cronje 13 years after it rocked the cricketing world. According to reports, police have made a charge sheet against the five bookies. The charge sheet is expected to be presented before a chief metropolitan magistrate in New Delhi. Reports quoted sources as saying that police are expected to produce telephone call records between Cronje and Chawla that runs into hundreds of pages. However, the charge sheet is unlikely to name Gibbs or Boje, reports say.Earlier in 2000, Cronje was accused by Delhi Police for accepting money from Indian bookie Sanjeev Chawla to under perform during the one-day series in India. He was later banned from the game for life in October 2000. Cronje was also accused of persuading team-mates Herschelle Gibbs, Nicky Boje and Pieter Strydom to underperform.
Cronje, in an enquiry set up by the South African cricket board, admitted to accepting $10 000 to $15 000 from Chawla.
Cronje died in a plane crash due to bad weather in June 2002.
