Probe all matches, says Manohar
Even as Board of Control for Cricket in India president N. Srinivasan remained defiant about resigning on Sunday, his predecessor Shashank Manohar advocated sweeping changes as he came down hard on the cricket board.
The BCCI must come out clean and clean up the system entirely, not partially, he told the correspondent of a national channel.
Manohar, considered a non-controversial and clean figure in cricket circles, was of the opinion that public perception about the BCCI and cricket was bad at the moment. He suggested the BCCI should file an FIR against the accused and take strict and stern action against the guilty.
“Action must be taken against all involved without leniency,” Manohar was quoted as saying.
Manohar also wanted all matches in IPL-6 to be investigated, by a government agency.
The former BCCI president felt the board should seek phone details of everyone involved in IPL-6 and hand them over to an investigating agency.
“Every player, official and team owner must furnish their mobile phone numbers to the BCCI and should be liable to be probed by the agencies. Failure to do so should entail severe punishment and suspension of the player or the official,” the correspondent quoted Manohar as saying.
“Every tournament, every fixture will have to be probed,” he added.
However, Manohar pointed out that the BCCI lacked teeth when it came to detective work and that the probe should be handed over to an outside agency.
“The BCCI or the Anti-Corruption unit do not have the powers to detect or investigate. The BCCI needs to approach the Home Ministry and seek a probe by a government agency.”
