Probe England players too: Butt
Islamabad, Sept. 19: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ejaz Butt on Sunday levied serious accusations against England players, saying some of them made “enormous money” in the ongoing one-day series between the two teams in England.
“We will not spare the (Pakistani) players who may be involved in match-fixing, but they are not alone in this business. The English players have also made enormous money in this series,” Butt told this newspaper.
“You see how their batting collapsed in the third one-dayer that Pakistan won. They were definitely involved (in match-fixing),” he added. “The Pakistani players should not be the only ones to be punished. If others (from other countries) are making millions, they should also be brought to the book.”
The PCB chief said that the bookies had also referred to some English players, who were making money even as the players from Pakistan are being held accountable.
“I do not mean that the Pakistan players (if involved in fixing) should be let off free, but why don’t we mention the English players or others. The law should be the same for all,” he said.
“The bookies say that they paid an enormous amount of money to the English players. This should also be investigated.”
Butt’s allegations come a day after the International Cricket Council launched a probe in the third one-dayer played at The Oval.
Pakistan won by 31 runs.
Butt also lashed out at Haroon Lorgat saying that the ICC chief executive was “not a saint from heaven making statements everyone should believe in”.
Butt added that it was unfortunate that statements and allegations had been levied against the Pakistan players, without any investigation, and that he would be bring up these questions with the ICC at a meeting on October 11.
