Raging Bull: Suman peeved at omission from ‘A’ team
Tirumalsetti Suman has reason to be peeved. A fruitful season for the Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League was not enough to gain a berth in the India ‘A’ team to tour England next month. Suman does not
possess an ideal technique nor has he displayed the hunger for big runs but the aggressive streak he brings to the crease cannot be disputed.
A new-age player, Suman has thrived on flashy 30s so far. Exciting strokes and a fearless approach make the 26-year-old a prospect who can be thrown in at the deep end. If there is one former player who can empathise with Suman it should be the chairman of the selection committee, Kris Srikkanth.
“I have not been able to convert my starts and that is an area I am working on at the moment,” said Suman.
The need to be consistent through an entire first class season is imperative from a selection perspective. On being overlooked for the tour to England, Suman offered a pragmatic view: “It is disappointing no doubt especially when there is not much cricket to be played for another three months. But I can use this time to prepare well,” added Suman.
In 14 IPL-3 innings, Suman managed 307 runs at an average of 34.11 and a strike rate of 119.45. The impact he created with a few knocks proved he could compete with the best in the business.
The match-winning 78 against Royal Challengers Bangalore was a special effort. Add the tidy off-spin and quick legs on the field, Suman provides the perfect package for a one-day all-rounder. “I did not get to bowl much for the Chargers this season but I am hopeful of making a contribution with the ball and also improve my fielding. I have been working with Kanwaljit Singh on my bowling and I want to contribute in all departments,” noted Suman.
Hyderabad have been relegated to the Ranji Trophy Plate Group. Players like Suman have a huge role to play in lifting the state back to the Elite Group. The responsibility should work well for Suman.
