Raise the bar for umpiring, says Dhoni
Nov. 11: When VVS Laxman and Zaheer Khan were adjudged leg-before off deliveries that produced an inside edge in the first Test at Motera, umpire Steve Davies faced the wrath of the hosts, not to mention of those who were in favour of the usage of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS).
But, Indian skipper M.S. Dhoni doesn’t seem to be convinced yet. He insists that the standard of on-field umpiring must be improved and UDRS should never be a substitute to that. “You have two umpires who are supposed to take the decisions on the field. If you see Laxman’s decision in Ahmedabad, I don’t know what to say exactly about it,” Dhoni said on Thursday.
Despite the high-pressure job of umpires, Dhoni wasn’t ready to forget the magnitude of mistakes committed by umpires in recent times. He did point out that the errors could force India to accept the UDRS. “If they (umpires) keep committing the kind of mistakes they are at the moment, we’ll have to go with the UDRS,” Dhoni said.
