From Jamie Dwyer to ‘Jamie Singh Dwyer’ in a span of a week, the Australian hockey skipper is lapping up the experience of playing in the inaugural Hockey India League.

Five times FIH Player of the Year — the only one in the world to get the honour — Dwyer is the captain of the Punjab Warriors in the city-based league that got under way on the day, and is becoming their go-to man. In the team’s hometown Jalandhar, he is affectionately referred to as ‘Jamie Singh’.
The 33-year striker reveals that he is a Sachin Tendulkar fan, loves spending time with family and is afraid of sharks and snakes. A look at some little-known facts about the Australian star:

Earliest sporting memory: Playing my first hockey match. I remember having lots of fun with my friends and my parents telling me that I played good.

Sports played: Hockey, cricket and golf. I love all sports.

Most memorable sporting moment: Winning gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Worst sporting moment: Injuries

Sporting heroes: Sachin Tendulkar

Favourite venues: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Other sport you would pay the most to see: Golf, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy playing against each other.

Biggest regret: Not reaching my potential at an earlier age.
Who would you most like to invite to dinner and why? Michael Jordan, because he is a legend and it will be amazing to listen to his stories.

People you learnt most from: My parents, Ric Charlesworth and Barry Dancer.
How will you like to be remembered? As a skilful player who gave it his all for Australia.

Hobbies: Hanging out with my family, going to the beach and golf.

What do you never leave home without? My phone.

A habit you wish to get rid of: Spending too much money

Favourite actor: Charlize Theron

Any superstition? No

Funniest fan letter/proposal? I get a few funny Facebook messages and some funny tweets but nothing I can remember off the top of my head.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Hopefully, still involved in the Hockey India League. Also staying involved in hockey somehow.

What’s the one thing that frightens you most? Snakes, sharks and crocodiles.

What if not a hockey player? I would love to travel and play golf all around the world.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
