When S. Badrinath was picked by Chennai Super Kings in 2008, even his most ardent supporter would not have given him a chance to be the batting mainstay of CSK.

From a solid middle order batsman who thrived on technique and an unflappable mind, Badri has made the necessary adjustments to his game to fit the T20 bill as well.

The 31-year-old opened out on life outside the boundary line. Excerpts.

Your first experience holding cricket bat: At age seven playing with a broken rubber ball.

Most memorable sporting moment: My maiden call up to the national side.

Worst sporting moment: When I got out against South Africa at the Eden Gardens.

Sporting heroes: Sachin Tendulkar, Mike Hussey, Rahul Dravid, Rafael Nadal and Lance Armstrong.

Favourite venue: Chepauk.

Sporting event you would pay the most to see: Wimbledon final between Nadal and Federer.

Questions most asked by the public and the press: Do you get frustrated at regularly being overlooked by the national selectors.

Sporting motto: To give my best at all times.

Who would invite to dinner — and why? Katrina Kaif. She is the hottest actress at the moment.

Biggest regret: Not getting enough time with my daughter, Daksha.

The best match you ever saw: The second Ashes Test in England, 2005.

The person you learnt most from: My father.

The sports personality you admire most: Mike Hussey.

Favourite holiday spot: Heard a lot about the beauty of Italy (want to be there ASAP).

How will you like to be remembered? Someone who gave it his all.

Other interests in your life: Watching golf, music and travelling, classic movies, spending time with family.

Your one piece of advice to youngsters: You only get what you give.

Pet name: Bata.

Your biggest extravaganza: My white BMW 3 Series.

What do you never leave home without? Car keys, wallet and phone.

The craziest thing you have ever done: Fell inside a well when I was 10 at YMCA.

Your best and worst trait: Patience at the crease; my temper outside the field.

What’s your worst nightmare? My daughter falling ill.

Favourite actor(s): Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth.

Favourite actress: Kajol.

Superstition: None.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
