Sacked Modi’s wings clipped
New Delhi, Oct. 15: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday alerted airports and other entry points across the country to detain Mr Modi for alleged Fema violations. The former IPL chairman is currently in London. The “lookout circular” has been sent by the ED to all entry points and airports in the country along with his photographs and the agency has started the process of getting his passport revoked.
According to sources, the ED is likely to book him under PMLA. There are reports that Mr Modi allegedly invested a huge amount in some benami companies in tax haven countries, sources said. The central revenue intelligence agency is likely to send a team of officials to Mauritius, Cyprus, the Caribbean Islands, Bahamas and Virgin Islands to find the link to some “benami” companies that have allegedly put money into certain IPL teams. They added that this violated Fema as well as PMLA. There are 18 foreign-based benami companies which reportedly invested funds in several IPL teams, sources said, adding the same was under investigation.
“There are also reports that funds were sent abroad through hawala channels, which is a violation of the PMLA. Agencies are also questioning some of the suspected hawala operators based in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune and Jaipur in this connection,” sources added. Amid allegations of match-fixing in the IPL-2, central agencies are also examining the role of D-Company in betting during matches. Sources revealed that D-Company controls the entire betting racket in Southeast Asia. They said investigations revealed that bookies from Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune and Jaipur were involved in match-fixing during IPL-2.
