Steyn, big buy for DC
Jan. 8: Champions of the IPL second edition, Deccan Chargers, who had narrowly missed out a Champions League finish last season, had their plans in place on Saturday, picking up nine seasoned players on the first day of the auction. Of the lot, five are foreigners with three Indian bowlers in the mix as they revealed an impressive new-look squad.
Their biggest buy was South African pace bowler, Dale Steyn, and they pursued him until Royal Challengers gave into their bid at the $1.2 million mark. Starting off with a neat pick — Kevin Pietersen, whom they roped in for a relatively low price of $650,000 after Pune dropped out of the race, the Chargers bided their time.
The other notable pick by the Chargers was Kumar Sangakkara, who starting off at a base price of $300K was roped in at $700k. Jean-Paul Duminy, who served Mumbai Indians superbly in the past was an economical buy at $300k as was Shikhar Dhawan, a reliable opening bat.
Among bowlers, the Chargers gunned for Ishant Sharma outbidding the Challengers at $450k. Pragyan Ojha was the only player from their previous squad to find favour. The Chargers then bid actively for leg-spinner Amit Mishra, a Delhi Daredevils bowler with credit in the last three seasons.
