Ten doeschate for Otago

Otago Volts all but booked their place in the main round of the Champions League T20 with a comprehensive six-wicket demolition of Kandurata Maroons in Wednesday’s early match of the qualifying rounds at the PCA Stadium here, powered home by all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate.
The experienced Dutchman — in action for Essex till two days ago — first took two wickets for nine runs and then blasted a 32-run 64 that included five sixes as the Volts chased down the 155-run target with ease, reaching their target with six wickets and 12 balls in hand.
Solid contributions from the top order other than skipper Brendon McCullum meant that Otago were always ahead of the asking rate. Openers Neil Broom and Hamish Rutherford contributed 25 and 20, while the promoted James Neesham chipped in with an unbeaten 32 (19b, 3x4, 1x6).
With ten Doeschte, Broom put on 57 in just 30 deliveries for the fourth wicket. En route ten Doeschate launched into the gentle spin of Kaushal Lokurachichi, hitting him for three sixes on the trot in the 11th over, and with the momentum of run-making at a steady tempo, the Maroons could only look on as their qualifying hopes evaporated into Mohali’s evening mist.
Earlier, the Volts made sure the strong Maroons lineup would not get too many on the board after deciding to field, keeping the Sri Lankan team down to a manageable 154/9 thanks largely to excellent Ian Butler who picked up three wickets from four deliveries at a crucial stage of the innings.
Opener Upul Tharanga was threatening to take the Maroons to a big score when Butler struck in the 18th over, his final one of the innings. Tharanga (76, 56b, 6x4, 2x6) mishit an on-drive that Brendon McCullum did well to pull down inside the circle. Lokuhettige has his stumps disturbed and Chamara Silva was trapped leg before in the space of three balls and all of a sudden, the Maroons were in serious strife.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
