Two bookies held for accepting bets on ongoing Test series
Two bookies were arrested from suburban Borivali for allegedly accepting bets on the ongoing India-Australia and Sri Lanka-South Africa Test series and seized Rs 6.30 lakh in cash and other valuables from them, police said on thursday. Acting on a tip off, a trap was laid at Shiv Dham Apartment in Borivali last evening.
As a police team barged into a flat in the building, the two accused, identified as Mukesh Shah (45) and Chandrakant Shah (56) were found accepting bets. "Cash of Rs 6.30 lakh, two laptops, two key boards, 11 mobile phones, a walkie-talkie, a printer, a television set were among various materials confiscated from their possession," police said.
"The two would stay in touch with a large number of people in the state and used to charge money from them for wagering," said a police officer. "Some documents believed to be records of money transactions that used to take place while betting were also seized," he added.
Call details of the cellphones recovered from the accused are being scrutinised and further investigations could reveal names of more persons involved in the racket, police said. The duo was booked under relevant sections of the Gambling Act and the IPC in Borivali police station.
