India’s U-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand’s happy homecoming on was somewhat diluted by the news of St. Stephens College failing him for low attendance even as the issue dominated the headlines, pulling some well known names including sports minister Ajay Maken into the debate.

But the 19-year-old does not agree that the brouhaha over the issue has overshadowed his achievement.

“I came yesterday. I did not know what was happening till I saw it on television. I am surprised that it became such a big issue but I don’t think that it has overshadowed my win,” Unmukt said at a media interaction in Noida on Friday. The youngster, however, said that he was hopeful that things would be sorted out soon.

“The college has been really supportive and I hold no grudges or complaint against them. I am of the view that such students should generally be helped out by colleges. I have spoken to the sports in-charge today and will be going to meet the principal soon. Hopefully, things will be sorted out as people have really been positive.”

On the cricket front, meanwhile, things are on the upswing for Chand even as messages continue to pour in including from members of the Indian team on their triumph.

“Yuvraj called me after the match and congratulated me and said he watched the entire match. He even asked me to meet him sometime.

“I have been in touch with him but I was surprised to receive a call from Suresh Raina. He too congratulated me and told me that the entire Indian team watched the final. He also said — see you soon in India team — and it gave me huge motivation.”

Unmukt next heads to New Zealand in his maiden senior tour as a part of the India A squad but at the moment he is enjoying a short break at home. The team will play three unofficial ODIs and two unofficial Tests.

“I have just come back from the World Cup and will stay for two-three days at home. The camp for the New Zealand tour begins on September 4. Once I join the camp, I will start planning for the tour.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
