What the hell is this, asks stunned Warne
There was widespread condemnation of the Rajasthan Royals trio’s alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League with many calling for a deterrent punishment for their misdemeanor.
“Somebody who associates himself with match-fixing, I think strict action should be taken against these players. The BCCI should also work towards bringing a permanent end to this problem,” former board president Sharad Pawar said on Thursday.
Former Royals’ skipper Shane Warne, with whom the franchise won their only IPL title, was also stunned at the development. “What the hell is this about the Royals in the IPL ? Are the reports True or false,” the legendary Australian leg-spinner posted on Twitter.
“Have never & will never understand the mindset of players that get lured into a quick buck...fame was always the motivation for me,” former player Sanjay Manjrekar said in his post.
“It’s a black morning for me and for those who have played this gentleman's game. There should be a strong penalty. They should be sent to jail for a minimum of 12 to 15 years and banned for life,” said former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani.
Shaun Tait, whose name is also being linked to the case, has vehemently denied the allegation. “Been a shocking day, can’t believe my name has been dragged through this mess.”

Sports ministry calls for strict action

New Delhi, May 16
With the spot-fixing scandal in the Indian Premier League evoking strong reactions from all quarters, the sports ministry on Thursday called for “deterrent punishment” to the three cricketers — arrested on the day for their alleged involvement in illegal activities — if they were found guilty.
In a statement on Thursday, sports minister Jitendra Singh said he had spoken to IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla on the issue and “impressed upon him to take urgent steps to put in place a mechanism to prevent such unethical activities and ensure clean up the sport in the country.
“It is unfortunate that Delhi Police have arrested some cricket players for their alleged role in the spot fixing,” the statement said.
