Dance gets a meaty role in movies again

When he was directing his first film, people were expecting great dance numbers in it. It was an obvious expectation from a choreographer turning a director.

While Remo D’Souza’s Faaltu did pretty well and was liked by youngsters, especially the song Chaar Baj Gaye…, the dance numbers were not really spoken about much. However, the dance master is back, this time with an out and out dance film, Any Body Can Dance (ABCD).
Remo says that he always wanted to start his directorial career with a dance film but somehow it didn’t happen. “I always wanted to do a dance film first. But even though it has happened after Faaltu, it’s good, as people now trust me as a director,” says Remo, who had the idea of this film ready with him even before Faaltu.
Coming up with a dance-based film wasn’t easy though. “There haven’t really been many dance-based films. There were a few like Navrang and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, but that was long back. Not many people have tried their hand at the genre in the recent few years. In fact, the genre seems to have disappeared. I want to bring that back,” says Remo, who has got together Prabhudeva and Ganesh Acharya as actors in his film, besides a motley group of dance-crazy youngsters.
He says he wants to bring genre-based movie back to the industry. Seeing his interest in dance, people really opened up to the idea of a film based just on dance. “I never thought my idea would get such a warm response. But I’m happy that it has,” he says.
Getting the two stalwarts of dance, that too as actors, for his film wasn’t so difficult. “When I met Prabhudeva for the first time, I told him that I wanted him in my film and he agreed. Ganesh was a little difficult to get on board, as he was busy with his choreography work. Another difficulty was to make him act. Prabhu has had an acting experience but Ganesh was very new to it. But then we made an awesome team,” he says.
And Prabhudeva’s experience as a director and choreographer was helpful for Remo too. “He knew what a director wants. He was very cooperative and the best thing was that he never interfered in my creativity,” he says and adds, “As far as Ganesh is concerned, he was equally accommodating and he also loved the role he was enacting.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
