A place of her own

That’s what Shruti Haasan has on her mind, since she has shifted base to Mumbai

There’s a new project that’s occupying Shruti Haasan’s mind: redecorating her new apartment in Mumbai.

Shruti, who anyway has her hands full, juggling the roles of musician and actor, has now taken on the mantle of interior decorator as well. Accordingly, her new home in the suburbs will now reflect Shruti’s sensibilities.
Shruti says she decided to set up base in Mumbai as the city has always made her feel at home, adding, “This (redecorating) is my debut assignment. I’m very excited and nervous about my new house and the responsibilities that come with it.”
It’s also a lot of hard work figuring out just what to put where, she says, “It’s a huge task picking the right items to fit in. I’m taking my own time because I want to like the end product.”
Of course, we’re sure that Shruti’s decorating budget must have expanded a bit since the girl’s celebrating the box office success of her latest Telugu film, Gabbar Singh, which has grossed the highest ever collections for a Telugu film in recent times. In fact, Shruti is just back from Hyderabad, where she had gone on a promotional visit for Gabbar Singh.
But is Shruti now working towards the same kind of success in Bollywood as well, given her move to Mumbai? “It’s much more than that,” says Shruti. “There was no dearth of Hindi film offers,” she says, giving the impression that just like with her home, she wants to pick and choose before committing to anything. For now then, it’s only her home that Shruti wants to focus on — and on her music of course. Music is her passion, she insists, and with that, as with acting, she has plenty of offers she’s contemplating.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
