‘Child labour work at Games sites’
The Delhi BJP has sought a probe by child rights group on engaging children at Commonwealth Games projects sites. BJP chief Vijendra Gupta made the demand after inspecting five stadia being constructed for the Games found that child labourers are being employed in the projects.
Mr Gupta said while on one hand chief minister Sheila Dikshit claims to be a well-wisher of the children but on the other hand “child slavery” is being forced under her supervision and they are being exploited at Games sites. He added that the BJP will complain this matter to Children Rights Commis-sion and demanded an enquiry into it.
Mr Gupta also stated that the way in which the symbol of 1982 Asiad, Appu, was subjected to atrocities in the same way child labourers are being exploited in the construction works of the Games.
“All labour laws are being violated. The child labourers do not have helmets on their heads, gloves in their hands and boots in theirs legs. There is no proper arrangement for their accommodation. Even the bathrooms are not there,” alleged Mr Gupta. A team of BJP leaders led by Mr Gupta inspected projects at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Khelgaon premises, Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherji Stadium on Friday.
