‘City lost 2,000 trees since 2007’
Over 900 trees have been cut in areas under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporation of Delhi since 2007 for various civil works while more than 850 got uprooted due to rains or storm.
During the same period, 299 trees have fallen due to natural reasons like storms in areas looked after by the New Delhi Municipal Council, according to latest official figures. No study was conducted by the department of forests of the Delhi government, MCD or Delhi Cantonment Board on the health of trees in the city. However, Dehra Dun-based Forest Research Institute recently conducted a survey of 6,288 trees on 48 roads and central vista in the NDMC area. Out of these, 5,507 trees were found healthy, 435 dead or destroyed, 86 deformed, 221 diseased and 145 with physical injuries, the figures show. From 2007, 910 trees were cut in MCD areas for civil works while 852 got uprooted due to rains or storm. For every tree that is cut by an agency or an individual, 10 saplings have to be planted and a refundable security amount of `1,000 per tree cut has to be deposited.

Abducted youth, 19, found dead
Ghaziabad, Dec. 19: A 19-year-old youth was found dead in the jungle near Hapur, after he was allegedly abducted by unidentified persons, the police said on Sunday.
Anurag, son of JD(U) state secretary Ashok Sharma, was abducted on December 16 and his body was found on Saturday evening, superintendent of police (rural) M.M. Beg said.
A case against unidentified persons has been registered in this regard. —PTI
