‘Get convicts treated for drug addiction’
Rohini Court additional sessions judge (ASJ) Dr Kamini Lau has in a recent order directed the Tihar Jail authorities to provide medical help to two robbery convicts, as they were drug addicts and indulged in crime to buy narcotic.
Dr Lau said, “It is evident that both the convicts are also reported to be addicted to drugs and the present crime appears to be an outcome of this addiction.”
The court awarded eight years’ jail term to Peri Swamy with `2,000 fine and five years imprisonment to M. Narasimhan with `10,000 fine for robbing one Ramu Gupta of `9,500 at knife-point in Saraswati Vihar on August 31 last year.
“Keeping in view the intent of the legislation which provides for reformative approach towards addicts, the superintendent (of the) jail concerned is directed to ensure that the convicts are provided professional help for the purpose of rehabilitation,” the ASJ said.
Dr Lau also directed the superintendent to get the convicts treated from “any centre established by the government in pursuance to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for the purposes of treatment, education, rehabilitation and after care.”
The court also directed the jail authorities to submit medical reports of the two on monthly basis.
