‘Kids manage 2,200 households in city’
A survey under the Mission Convergence of the Delhi government has pegged the number of socially vulnerable at eight lakh, while noting that there are about 2,200 households being run by children in the absence of their parents. Delhi government is working on a plan to come up with family development scheme to gauge the impact of various social welfare schemes being run by it.
“There are about eight lakh socially vulnerable people in the capital, the figure was four lakhs in 2006. There are about 65,000 homeless though some more survey is still on in this regard,” stated Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, who made a presentation on the achievements of Mission Convergence to the media on Wednesday.
He said that there are 1,98,911 elderly, 54,964 disabled and 47,763 widows in the city. “Delhi government is planning to trim the list of over 40 schemes being implemented to 12 comprehensive programmes so that the delivery mechanism could be monitored effectively,” he added. He informed that the government is working on drafting new laws on begging and rickshaws.
