‘Kids suffer due to poor nutrition’
The cause of poor health of school going children could be tiffin packed by their mothers and not the canteen food alone. ]
A survey conducted by an NGO across 15 schools in Delhi and National Capital Region has concluded that unhealthy food is as much responsible for diseases among children as much as outside food.
Swashrit, an NGO, conducted this survey among 10,000 school children, and observed out that most of the children felt exhausted at the end of the day and faced difficulty in jogging for more than 15 minutes at a stretch.
As per the survey, 50 per cent of the children who were interviewed said they ate eggs or pulses and nuts only once a week. Children supplement the home food with canteen food and they prefer burgers, kathi rolls, chowmein, chips and pizzas.
The survey was headed by Dr Bhavna Barmi, senior clinical psychologist at the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre. Talking to reporters she said, “The cause of concern among school children is obesity and diabetes. In a majority of the cases, we found home food no better than canteen sold junk food as it had high quantity o saturated fat. Today, parents do not have time to correct their children’s diet,” she said.
