‘Late hour changes delayed stadia work’
First, the idea of having a tunnel and, now, installation of an aerostat lighting system at a late hour was on Monday cited by the CPWD for a delay of nearly five months in completion of the renovation and upgradation of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games will be held, apart from some sports competitions.
Speaking on the CPWD’s 156th Foundation Day, CPWD director general B.K. Chugh said had it not been for these major additions, the work should have been over much earlier.
“On October 23 last year, a suggestion was made that there should be a tunnel from where the athletes should ‘sprout from beneath the ground’ on the playing arena. As a result, other works were affected as they could not be completed unless the tunnel was in place. Consequently, the entire work was delayed by three months,” said Mr Chugh. He added that the stadium is also now going to have a helium-based aerostat for spectacular lighting arrangements. This too was suggested only some time ago, he said.
Mr Chugh, however, maintained that all the works related to the construction has been completed. “Greening of nearly 102 acres around the stadium has begun and it will be over soon,” he said.
Mr Chugh further pointed out that the new roof of the stadium is the largest in the world. “The original structure of 1982 Asiad has not been touched and the roof has been raised using 2.8 km of cables, Mr Chugh said.
