‘No radiation threat in Mayapuri’
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) dismissed the claims of an international agency which claimed that the Mayapuri scrap market has high levels of radiation.
In a statement, the AERB admitted there was some contamination in local spots but it could not pose any health detriment.
Also the scrap dealers are set to sue those responsible for their condition, which landed them in hospital.
The AERB made it clear that all the Cobalt-60 sources from the disposed off gamma cell were recovered and the same was confirmed on the basis of inventory check of the radioactive material.
“However, some traces of dust or particles of Cobalt-60 arising from cutting of the radioactive pieces have left some contamination in local spots. Radiation from these spots was far below levels which could pose any immediate health detriment,” the statement issued on behalf of AERB secretary Om Pal Singh said.
Environment advocacy group Greenpeace had on Friday claimed to have found six hotspots with “considerably elevated radiation levels”.
However, the agencies carried out the clean up programme which brought down the level, the statement added. The decontamination will be carried out next weekend too.
