‘Test veggies randomly for pesticide’
The Delhi high court on Wednesday asked the Centre and the city government to procure vegetables “randomly” from various places and test them for pesticide content.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, hearing a PIL, said, “We would like to find out as to whether pesticides are there in the
vegetables sold in Delhi or not. It would be appropriate that the vegetables be purchased randomly and sent for test at laboratories certified by National Accredition Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories.”
The court had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of a news report about rampant use of banned pesticides in vegetables.
The court asked Additional Solicitor-General A.S. Chandiok, standing counsel for Delhi government Najmi Waziri, DLSA member secretary Asha Menon to go together and purchase vegetables randomly and file a report within five weeks.
