‘Tihar officials not following orders’
The authorities of the high-security Tihar jail have allegedly flouted the order of the court on providing medical aid to an undertrial prisoner lodged in the jail in the TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan murder case.
Amit Kumar, lawyer of the accused Amit Kumar Shukla, talking exclusively to this newspaper over phone, said, “Even if he (Shukla) is an accused, he should have been given proper medical treatment as per the court’s order. But, the Tihar authorities have flouted the court order.”
As per Mr Kumar, Shukla was allegedly beaten by the jail superintendent and two other officials on June 22. The officials had promised to provide Shukla dry fruits, medical treatment, mobile phone etc. in lieu of getting Rs 25,000, but when did not give the money, they brutally beat him with a stick.
After sustaining injuries in the face, thigh and other parts, Shukla moved an application before the metropolitan magistrate Sumit Dass, who ordered the jail officials to provide him treatment at AIIMS, Safdar-jung or RML Hospital, but they did not, Mr Kumar said.
