‘United action to make women safe’
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday called for united efforts to enhance security of women in the city. The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, had said on Saturday that women in the city are not safe despite one of them being the chief minister.
Speaking at a function to mark the International Women’s Day on Tuesday, Ms Dikshit said that united efforts from all stakeholders are needed to improve security of women. She called upon the civil society and NGOs to play a key role in helping government improve security for women.
She also stressed on the fact that women need to come forward and gain economic and social status as they could then create awareness and be role models for others. \
Ms Dikshit said that her government is working on a new scheme to encourage entrepreneurship among women.
Speaking at the event, Delhi Commission of Women chairperson Barkha Singh said that the city government would soon launch a scheme under which women members of all the 43 panchayats in the city would be given physical training so that they can resist atrocities. About 1,100 women would be imparted training in the first phase, she added.
Meanwhile, Delhi women and child welfare minister Kiran Walia said that protection officers for domestic violence would be provided three mobile vans and cellphones for prompt response to complaints.
