11 arrested for betting on Cup tie
With the arrest of 11 people, including 10 businessmen, the Delhi police on Friday claimed to have busted four betting rackets which were operational during the India-Australia World Cup tie on Thursday.
The Delhi police has arrested 14 people in connection with betting on cricket matches since the World-Cup started.
The 11 people arrested were operating in Tri Nagar, Vishnu Garden, Budh Vihar and Palam Colony during the knock-out match between India and Australia at Ahmedabad, confirmed deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Chand. Police officers further confirmed that out of the 11 who have been arrested, four are property dealers, two are commission agents, a courier agent, a travel operator, a canteen owner, a dog kennel owner and a part-time worker.
“Total bets received by the four betting syndicates was around `3.70 crores. Three laptops, 55 mobile phones, a data card, four TVs, four calculators and notebooks have been recovered,” the police said further.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police conducted a drive against vendors selling tobacco products around schools and hospitals in the city on Friday.
The raids were conducted against vendors across five districts and come almost three months after the Delhi high court directed police commissioner B.K. Gupta to enforce the Control of Tobacco Products Act.
“The drive was conducted from 12 pm to 2 pm in the central district, primarily in areas that fall under the jurisdiction of Daryaganj and Kamla Market police stations,” said deputy commissioner of police (central) Vivek Kishore.
