11-yr-old dies in night shelter fire
A 11-year-old homeless girl met her tragic end in a fire that engulfed a night shelter near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Parliament Street area on Friday night. There were no fire-fighting equipment inside the shelter when the fire erupted.
The police said the incident took place late on Friday night when the Delhi fire services received a call at around 2.30 am that a night shelter for homeless situated near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Parliament Street had caught fire and more than two dozen women were trapped inside. The night shelter is run by the Lodhi Colony-based NGO All-India Social Security Services.
“Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes with the help of the locals who were using buckets filled with water to control the flame. During the rescue operation, the charred body of a 11-year-old girl, Vineeta, was found lying in the debris. She was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where the doctors declared her brought dead,” a fire official said.
