1,768 water samples unfit: MCD
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, already receiving flak for poor management during the monsoon season, on Wednesday claimed that more than 1,700 samples of water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board was unfit for drinking.
The figures, furnished by the health department officials, led to allegations and counter allegations between the BJP and Opposition Congress councillors during the meeting of the MCD’s standing committee.
The municipal health officials told the committee that out of the 15,647 samples of drinking water collected from the city July 1 this year, at least 1,768 samples were found contaminated. In 2009, the number of samples found unfit for drinking were 2,345 out of a total number of samples of 34,041.
Further, there were at least 159 cases of diarrhoea till July 1. Last year, the total number of cases were 1,066. Also, more than 53,000 cases of gastro-enteritis and 359 cases of jaundice were reported last year.
While the MCD standing committee chairman Yogendera Chandolia expressed concern over the situation, another BJP councillor suggested “some legal action” against the DJB if the situation does not improve.
Mr Chandolia pointed out that the standing committee could not issue any instruction as the chief minister was the chairperson of the DJB. “But the matter should be looked into seriously as it would affect the health of a large number of residents,” said Mr Chandolia.
