1984 riot case victim deposes
A 45-year-old witness, who lost his three brothers in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, on Monday testified before a Delhi court in the trial of senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar how he had sought help from an Army officer in order to save his siblings.
“I had only told him (Major) that my elder brother has already been killed while he doesn’t know as he hasn’t seen the other two, who were possibly alive. I asked for his help as it could have saved the still surviving members,” Jagsher Singh deposed before ASJ Sunita Gupta.
Mr Singh’s brothers were, however, killed by the time the help could be provided by the Army officer.
Mr Singh also told the court how the police officers did not take any action on his complaint.
“I met a senior officer in the Delhi Cantonment police station on November 5, 1984. I talked to him for hardly two minutes. I asked him to record my complaint and take action against the culprits,” he testified.
In his testimony on October 19, Mr Singh had identified Mr Kumar as a person who had allegedly provoked the mob to kill his brothers during the carnage after the assassination of the then PM Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
