2 arrested for violence at Mosque site
Two persons were arrested from Subhash Park for allegedly indulging in violence during a protest near the recently discovered remains of the purported 17th century Akbarabadi mosque here, the police said on Sunday.
Around 100 people had gathered outside the site, where the Delhi high court had stayed any construction or gathering, on Saturday night demanding that they be allowed to offer prayers there.
The protesters pelted stones at vehicles, damaging three DTC buses, cars, and burnt five motorcycles.
Ten policemen were also injured in the violence. Three cases have been registered.
“Rumours have spread that there was a riot in the area. No such thing happened. Locals are very supportive. There was also rumour that the structure was damaged. This is also not true,” the official said.
Heavy police presence was witnessed in the area on Sunday to prevent any untoward incident and the roads leading to the Red Fort were barricaded.
