2 drown during idol immersion
Dussehra celebrations turned sour for residents of Sangam Vihar when two youth tripped and drowned in the Yamuna while immersing idols of Goddess Durga on Monday afternoon.
Police officials said the incident was reported from Kalindi Kunj area in south east Delhi at around 3 pm. A local diver managed to drag three others out of the river but could not rescue the two deceased, who have been identified as Pintu, 20, and Shailesh, 21, both residents of Sangam Vihar. The police said the deceased had gone to immerse idols of Goddess Durga along with their neighbours and other residents of the area in a lorry.
When the immersion started, five youth carrying an idol, accidentally tripped and fell into the water. “They were instantly washed away by the current. Seeing this, the group of people present on the bank raised an alarm. A local diver, identified as Bhola, jumped into the river and managed to rescue two teenaged boys Rahul, 16, and Arjun, 16 and 42-year-old Ram Lakhan,” a senior police official said.
In the meantime, a PCR call was made and a rescue team of Delhi fire service and Delhi police reached the spot.
The rescue team had to carry out an exhaustive rescue operation which lasted for hours before the bodies were fished out. “We have sent the bodies to AIIMS Trauma Centre for the post-mortem ,” the official added.
