2 held for bid to mow down cops
Two youth driving a jeep blaring loud music allegedly tried to mow down two policemen at India Gate when they were asked to stop. The policemen saved themselves and flashed a message on wireless to nab the accused. On seeing the police van behind, the youth sped away towards South Delhi. A message was then sent to south and southeast district police to nab the accused.
“The accused were finally nabbed at Greater Kailash traffic signal in the early hours of Sunday. Both were arrested and an FIR of attempt to murder and under other relevant sections was lodged. Their vehicle was impounded,” said a police official.
The accused were identified as Palinder Singh Jolly and Anmol Jeet Singh Bindra, both residents of Bhogal area.
The police said that Palinder Singh Jolly, who was driving the jeep, did not have any driving license neither they had vehicle documents.
Around 400 policemen were checking vehicles near India Gate as 43 extra police pickets have been set up in the area.
“We saw two youth driving a jeep in rash and negligence manner. They were asked to stop the jeep but they accelerated and tried to crush two traffic cops. The cops had to jump to save themselves. They immediately sent a wireless message giving the description of the occupants and the jeep’s number,” said the senior official. The accused Jolly is pursuing B.A. course from DU. Both the accused are into transport business.
The police on Sunday night impounded 25 motorcycles and prosecuted 136 bikers near India Gate. The police checked around 1,186 motorcycles on Saturday night.
“We had beefed up security in nearby area of India Gate to stop biker menace. In the recent past we had a tough time dealing with bikers and so we pressed around 400 cops into service,” said the official.
