2 killed, 3 injured in drunk driving
Two youths were killed and three others seriously injured when a drunk driver lost control of his vehicle and rammed it in the central verge of the road near Salim Garh in Ajmeri Gate on Saturday night.
The police said the incident was reported from Ring Road near Salim Garh at around 2 am when a PCR call about the crash was made by one of the victims. A team of cops arrived at the spot and rushed the survivors to a nearby hospital, “All the injured persons were drunk,” a police official said.
The police said seven youths from north Delhi had gone to attend a marriage party in Haryana and were returning when the incident took place.
All the youths had apparently consumed a lot of liquor. “While returning, the vehicle was being driven too fast. When they reached Salim Garh, the vehicle lost balance and hit the central verge of the road. It overturned and got badly damaged,” the official said.
“The driver and one of his companions died before they could be provided medical assistance while three others are in ICU at a hospital. Two men were lucky to escape with minor injuries. The medical examination of all injured persons revealed that they were under the influence of liquor,” he said.
Police officials said that the vehicle was being driven at 100 km per hour or more at the time of accident.
“It is painful to come across cases of unnecessary deaths on the road everyday. At the time of accident roads are largely empty. A combination of drinks and speed has caused deep anguish at least in five families. All this is absolutely avoidable,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg.
