2 railway staffers held for fraud
The crime branch has arrested two Indian Railway employees for running a fake railway recruitment scam and cheating hundreds of aspiring candidates in the city.
The accused have been identified as Om Pal Singh, 38, a helper in Northern Railways and Sandeep Kumar, 37, a staff welfare inspector in Indian Railway Conference Association here, the police said.
“They cheated more than 100 people since 2008 by demanding `2-4.5 lakhs for arranging job for them,” deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ashok Chand said.
The police had received a complaint against a railway employee who had promised the complainant a job for his daughter and the wife of his brother-in-law. “The accused offered him the post of booking reservation clerk or ticket checker. He had already paid `2.5 lakhs and Singh and Kumar asked him pay remaining the `2.5. lakhs after getting the job,” the DCP said.
“Singh and Kumar identified job aspirants through local contacts and showed the aspirants a recruitment form bearing seal of Railway Recruitment Board and a senior officer, both affixed using fake stamps and told him that the job is assured. The aspirants were told that they would have to appear in the examination or interview as a mere formality,” Mr Chand said.
“When the call letters for the examination were received by the candidate, the accused told them to sit in the examination. Sometimes the candidates cleared the examination on merit. The accused then told these successful candidates that their selection was ensured by them and took the money from them,” DCP Chand said.
