2,000 shifted as Yamuna swells over
Various low-lying areas in east and north Delhi were flooded after the Yamuna swelled over the danger mark by about two metres on Saturday evening, though the officials maintained that the river would start receding from Saturday night. More than 2,000 people were evacuated as the Yamuna rose to 206.78 metres on Saturday
evening, with officials hoping that the level would come down to 206.35 metres by 4 pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, a 21-year-old youth was reported missing after he was swept away by strong currents of the swollen Yamuna, while the Northern Railways had to divert a number of trains originating from the Old Delhi Railway Station following the closure of the Old Yamuna bridge.
Senior officials of the flood and irrigation department maintained that the Yamuna water threatened to enter parts of ISBT at Kashmere Gate. The city government closed the rail-cum-road iron bridge that links Old Delhi to Shahdara, which forced the railways to cancel or divert 53 trains in all.
The officials stated that over 30,000 cusecs of water is being released into the Yamuna on an hourly basis by Haryana. The low-lying areas of Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pushta, Jagatpur village and Shastri Nagar were reported to have been inundated.
Around 100 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed to assist the authorities in tackling the situation.
Meanwhile, the police said that a 21-year-old youth was reported missing after he was swept away by strong currents of Yamuna. “Deepak and his two friends went to swim in the river at 3 pm and were swept away by the strong current,” the police said, adding that two youths were rescued and around seven swimmers of the flood rescue team and a boat have been deployed to rescue Deepak.
