35% students turn out to elect new Dusu body

Delhi University students on Friday cast their votes to elect a new union in a poll which will decide the fate of 41 candidates.
A dismal 35 per cent of the students turned out to vote to elect their new union, following an election campaign that was watered down and without much fervour.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place and electronic voting machines were used for the polling. However, there was tension following the allegations that a student was seen distributing movie tickets to lure students was reported.
“A National Students’ Union of India candidate was caught selling tickets for film Dabangg near Guru Govind Singh College of Commerce, Pitampura. We demand an inquiry into it,” ABVP national secretary Shreerang Kulkarni alleged.
The NSUI, however, denied any such thing. When contacted chief electoral officer Prof. Gurmeet Singh said that any complaint will be looked into.
Prof. Singh also said that he has received complaints of distributing printed posters and bills which too will be looked into and a showcause notice will be served to the accused.
As many as 943 EVMs have been pressed into service. There are 111 centres for the college elections and 130 for Dusu. The security arrangements had been done by the Delhi police in coordination with the university administration.
A total of 11 candidates are contesting for the post of Dusu president in the election, while 30 other candidates are vying for the three posts of vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.
The candidates vying for president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary post from NSUI are Harish Choudhary, Vardhan Chaudhary, Deepika Deshwal, Akshay Kumar. The contenders of ABVP are Jitender Chaudhary, Priya Dabas, Neetu Dabas and Saurabh Uniyal.
Also in the fray is Aparajitha Raja, a second year student of Hindu college, who incidentally is the daughter of CPI leaders D. Raja and Annie Raja. She is contesting from the All-India Students Federation.
