60-yr woman raped, killed; accused arrested

A 60-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Majnu Ka Tila area of north Delhi. The police has arrested a 45-year-old man, Achchhey Lal. Lal had earlier been acquitted in a rape case in 2007.
Police officers said that the woman, who worked as a maid, was found dead at her residence. She was rushed to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital where she was declared brought dead, said the additional deputy commissioner of police (north) Rupender Kumar.
Investigators zeroed in on Lal following a tip off that he was the last person to be seen at the crime spot. His mobile phone was also found lying near the body. “Lal, who was trying to escape from the spot, was apprehended and he confessed to the crime during questioning,” said Mr Kumar.
“Initially, he tried to mislead the police by saying that she was a motherly figure. However, he later broke down and confessed to having killed the lady after raping her,” said the official.
The accused told the interrogators that his wife had gone to her native place since a long time and his sexual desires were not being fulfilled.
“The victim was the wife of a labourer whom the accused had employed and he visited their house frequently. On December 31, he reached her house and sent her husband out for some work. Later, Lal allegedly raped and murdered her,” added the police.
“They both consumed alcohol after which Lal allegedly attacked her. When the victim resisted, he shut her mouth with a cloth which caused her death,” said officials.
Lal, who lives in Gopalpur village of Timarpur area, belongs to Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He has been working with various tent owners for the last 15 years. The accused was earlier accused in a rape case reported from Civil Lines area.
