8 bookies held for Cup match bets
The crime branch of Delhi police arrested eight persons on Saturday for allegedly running three betting syndicates on the ongoing Cricket World Cup matches.
The police said the accused were operating from Rohini, Pitampura and Karol Bagh with the police claiming to have recovered four laptops and TV sets, 30 mobile phones, data cards and documents from their possession.
“Specific information was received that betting was taking place on India-Bangladesh World Cup match played on Saturday at a hotel in Karol Bagh, and at two residences in Rohini and Pitampura. Our teams conducted raids and the accused were arrested on the spot. They had received bets from punters to the tune of `2.78 crores,” deputy commissioner of police (crime), Ashok Chand said.
“Gaurav Sharma, 32, Shanku Arora, 29, Goldy Verma, 28, and Pankaj Saluja, 33, were arrested from the Karol Bagh hotel with two laptops, 18 mobile phones, 2 calculators, an LCD TV and documents. Devender Rana, 32, and Tarun Bhatia, 24, were arrested from Rohini with two LCD TVs, a laptop, six mobile phones, a printer, a data card and some documents. Anil Kumar Gupta, 43, and Navin Kumar Gupta, 41, were arrested from Pitampura. One laptop, a colour TV, 6 mobile phones and documents were recovered from them,” DCP Chand said.
“Most of the accused have been running these syndicates for years and were using a specifically generated software known as “Back ‘N’ Lay PRO” which automatically shows the fluctuating rates with the fall of wickets and runs scored. They were using the laptops for data entry and management of finances. The mobile phones are used for getting the rates of the odds on the match and for taking bets from punters,” the DCP said.
