8 held for duping students of `1cr
The Delhi police has arrested eight youths, including five girls, for allegedly cheating hundreds of students by promising them educational loans.
The gang was led by 24-year-old Varun Sardana, a former employee of a multinational bank. Sardana, his two school friends Himanshu Sharma, 21, and Sunny Pal, 22, and five girls aged between 19 and 27 years were arrested from their office at Parmanand Colony in Mukherjee Nagar on October 28.
The police has recovered 57 unused SIM cards, 18 ATM cards, 13 registers with details of transactions, a laptop, a computer and other documents. “They offered education loans through advertisements in local dailies. Once a needy person contacted them, they asked him to deposit a small amount of `2,500-3,000 in their bank account for registration. Sardana used girls to convince the victims,” additional commissioner of police (crime), Neeraj Thakur said.
The police claimed that more than 500 students have been duped by the gang over the last one year.
“A number of bank accounts used by the gang that show transactions worth more than `1 crore have been seized. Sardana hit upon the idea of floating a fake education loan firm when he was working in a multinational bank in Delhi. He left his well-paying job and recruited his school friends, Himanshu and Pal to run the racket in Delhi. He hired a few girls and trained them how to sell the story of easy education loan to gullible students,” he said.
“When a client called, the girls asked him to send all certificates via email. When they sent the certificates, they were asked to deposit more money to cover some deficiencies. The gang was found operating through 26 mobile phones and 16 bank accounts taken on fake IDs,” Mr Thakur said.
