AIIMS student found hanging
A final-year medical student of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in the AIIMS hostel on Thursday.
A senior police official said the deceased was identified as Supriya Meena, a native of Surat district in Gujarat.
The official said that her mother was staying with her in her hotel room for the past week and had left for home only Wednesday evening.
“We got a call of the incident and a team was sent to the spot. The police recovered a suicide note from the possession of the deceased. She has held herself responsible for the extreme step. She also has apologised to her family members,” said the police official.
Though she was a bright student and did well in her exam, she was suffering from depression over academic pressure.
The official said that Supriya has addressed the note to her mother, father and brother.
“She wrote that she is disturbed and is not able to concentrate on her studies and her preparation for the coming papers is not upto the mark,” said the police official quoting her note.
The incident came to light when the hostel attendant of the Girls’ hostel No 10 received a phone call at around 11 am from Prita Meena, mother of the deceased, who informed that her daughter was not responding to her calls.
On this, the lady security staff and the deputy security officer were immediately alerted and they rushed to the room. “They knocked on the door but there was no response. The door was locked from inside following which the institute security personnel forced open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan,” said Dr Y.K. Gupta, AIIMS spokesperson. The police was immediately informed and she was taken to the casualty ward where the doctors examined and declared her brought dead. “Meena was a good student and had passed her first and second professional examinations in first attempt. However, she was unwell since 2010,” Mr Gupta added.
Sources said she was undergoing treatment for depression in the AIIMS’ psychiatry department.
