Alert cook foils theft attempt at MP’s house

A vigilant cook thwarted an attempt made by an unidentified assailant to steal sanitary fittings at the Lutyens’ Delhi residence of BJP MP Rakesh Singh on Saturday morning.

Police sources revealed that the incident took place at around 6 am on Saturday when the cook Hem Raj, a native of Patna who works at 20, Rajender Prasad Road residence of Mr Singh, heard sound of water gushing in two bathrooms constructed separately near the cottage.
“On hearing the sound, Hem Raj woke up and walked to the bathroom where he found that the taps of one bathroom were missing and water was furiously gushing out. When he opened the door of another bathroom, he found an unidentified assailant inside who was trying to remove more taps. On seeing Hem Raj, the assailants got up and pushed Hem Raj to escape from the house, leaving behind the bag in which the stolen items were kept,” a source said.
Hem Raj tried to chase the assailant and started shouting for help. Since it was early morning, there was no one on the main road and the assailant managed to escape from the area.
Hem Raj then walked back to the house and informed Mr Singh, who represents the Jabalpur constituency of Madhya Pradesh in Lok Sabha, after which a complaint was lodged at the Parliament Street police station.
“We have received a complaint from Mr Singh and a case under Section 379 (theft) has been registered. The statement of Hem Raj has been recorded and we have identified the thief who was involved in the failed theft attempt. A team has been formed and he will be arrested soon,” a senior police official said.
