All city schools closed till Jan. 9
In the wake of the extreme cold conditions in the city, the Delhi government on Wednesday announced closure of all schools till January 9. Delhi continued to shiver even as the minimum temperature rose by 0.5 degrees Celsius over the season’s lowest recorded on Tuesday.
Delhi education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said that all unaided recognised schools, public schools, schools run by the MCD, NDMC and the Delhi Cant-onment Board will remain closed till January 9. He said that the decision was taken in the wake of several requests being received from parents and schools. The directorate of education has issued a circular in this regard. While several schools in the city are yet to reopen following the winter vacations, some schools had reopened this week.
Mr Lovely said the government will examine the situation at the end of this week.
Meanwhile, the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city were recorded at 13ºCelsius (eight degrees below normal) and 4.2º Celsius (three degrees below normal). On Tuesday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 12.7º Celsius and 3.7 degrees.
The peak power demand also continued to rise in the city and reached 3,927 MW on Wednesday.
The weatherman has predicted an increase in day temperatures from January 7 onwards by two to three degrees. For Thursday, the weatherman has forecast fog in the morning, coupled with cold day conditions.
