Army begins to dismantle JLN bridge
The Army on Tuesday began dismantling the foot-over bridge (FOB), constructed near the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium after the one constructed by the PWD collapsed. The bridge had collapsed on September 25.
A senior PWD official said that the dismantling process began on Tuesday morning and was likely to be completed in the next few days. The Army had taken only five days to construct the bridge after being delegated the task.
The official further said any decision with regard to the FOB, which had collapsed or another parallel structure on the same road, which could not be completed, would be taken later.
The PWD is awaiting the final report on the reasons behind the collapse, which had left nearly 25 labourers injured. The collapse not only raised serious questions about the preparedness of various structures of the CWG but also gave jitters to foreigners and Indians alike.
Following the collapse, the Delhi government sent an SOS to the Army, which later constructed the bridge, considered necessary to ensure trouble free pedestrian movement near the J.L. Nehru stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies were held. The Army not only constructed a stable bridge but also did so within a very short span of five days.
