Assembly rocked over Games row
The Delhi Assembly was rocked with pandemonium on the first day of the Monsoon session, with the Opposition BJP launching scathing attack on the government for alleged irregularities in the preparations of the Commonwealth Games. Leader of the Opposition Mr V.K. Malhotra accused the government of diverting about Rs 4,000 crores meant for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes for Games related works.
As soon as the Assembly Speaker, Mr Yoganand Shastri, called for Question Hour, Mr Malhotra stood to demand its suspension and taking up of a discussion on the Games. With the Speaker not agreeing to the demands, the BJP MLAs stood and started shouting slogans against the government. Four BJP MLAs suddenly flashed plates and started banging them, which led to their suspension by the Speaker, who had to adjourn the House twice.
Though a couple of questions were taken, they could be heard amidst the din created by the BJP MLAs. Later, the discussion was initiated by Mr Malhotra, who accused the government of corruption and extravagant spending in the names of the sporting event.
Delhi PWD minister Raj Kumar Chouhan replied to the discussion and asserted that “there has been no case of corruption in any of the Games projects”.
