Auto driver’s family loses its sole breadwinner
Raj Kumar, the auto driver, who died when a speeding Honda City car driven by a 30-year-old drunk woman collided head-on with his autorickshaw, is survived by five daughters. In fact, he was the only earning member of his family of nine. With his death, the family has lost the only source of livelihood. The family has demanded
compensation from the accused, Nivedita Singh, who was returning from a party where she had consumed liquor to “dangerous levels”. The police said Nivedita drove her Honda City car in an inebriated state and collided with the autorickshaw near a petrol pump in Gopinath Bazar, killing two, including a passenger and injuring two others.
The family of the deceased autorickshaw driver, including his five daughters and parents, is based in Uttam Nagar. “He was our sole breadwinner. How will we survive without him. We are nine family members. How can I take care of them,” said Ombir, 40, Kumar’s younger handicapped brother.
Kumar’s wife was inconsolable and people were consoling her as she kept wailing, seeking the return of her husband.
Ombir demanded compensation for Kumar’s death. “We have taken loan for our mother’s treatment. Kumar was paying the instalments. How will we repay the money now,” he questioned. The deceased’s three daughters study at a government school in Uttam Nagar and the family fears that they may have to drop from school following the tragic death of their father. The neighbours also demanded proper compensation for the family.
“We arrested Nivedita and she has been charged with death due to negligence. She was later released on bail but investigation is on,” a senior police official said.
Raj Kumar and Ved Prakash, a sweets shop owner in north Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla, were killed in the Saturday evening car-auto collision in the Delhi Cantonment area. Jeet and Megh Singh, hailing from Alwar in Rajasthan, who were also travelling in Kumar’s auto, were injured and are admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in a critical state.
